Without further ado, here we go, back into Michaela Dawson's sleepy camp, on the way to Elizabethtown, Illinois.

His face, fuzzy in its dreamlike state but still handsome as ever, filled her sleep-heavy mind. The blue-eyed dimpled face with the fading scar through the eyebrow, framed by those blonde waves that shone golden in the sunlight whenever he removed his felt hat. Peter. The face she’d hoped to wake to every day for the rest of her life, for as long as God saw fit…her Peter.
If only he had proposed forever. Katie’s heart ached deep in her chest, despite it only being a dream. “Peter,” she whispered, longing pulling at the end of his precious name. “Peter.”

His mouth, upturned at the ends ever so slightly, began to move. “Katie.”

WeWriWa - August 8, 2015 - Katie's Journey in Old Amarillo

Welcome back to Katie's Journey as we find out what kind of trouble Katie can get into along the trail to Texas and as we've seen . . . it's quite a lot!

Let's jump back onto that log at Michaela Dawson's camp and see what happens next.

With a reassuring pat, Michaela began again, not giving her time to respond. “Don’t worry darlin’. You’ll ride with us into Elizabethtown and I’ll give you a new bag, one that doesn’t smell like a coyote’s dinner. Once we arrive, if you are still of a mind to get to Texas, I’ll buy you a ticket on a railroad and lend you our scout, Johnny Tyler. He’s due to meet us in Elizabethtown tomorrow. That way, I’ll rest easy knowing you made it to your destination safely.”

Katie mumbled an ever-polite thank you as she struggled to keep her eyes open. Michaela led her to a bedroll beside the fire and began to sing. A strange song, Katie thought, as she drifted off to sleep. Something about a colored rose in a place called San Antone.

We're getting down to the nitty gritty -- less than a month before Old Amarillo releases! YAY! I'll be having a book launch and release party, beginning September 3 with the big release and continuing for a full week, with giveaways hosted by those wonderful gals at Loving the Book <3 I'll keep you all updated as we get closer!

WeWriWa - Old Amarillo - Katie's Journey 7/12/15

Welcome back to Katie's journey in my forthcoming release, Old Amarillo (Amish Journeys #1).  Last week, Katie had burst into Michaela Dawson's camp and enjoyed a pan of gritty beans while politely declining a ride back to her quaint Amish village. Let's see what happens next . . .

Michaela’s eyebrows arched skyward. “Well, best of luck to you, there's a mess of problems down south. If the bank robbers don’t get you, the grippe will.” She chugged a drink from a silver cup. “We’re headed even farther north, to Montana, ourselves . . . we inherited a cattle ranch.” She drained her drink and let the cup dangle between her knees. “We have until the end of the month to claim it, otherwise it goes to the next of kin and that rich old goat wouldn’t know what to do with a cow other than fart around and get himself stepped on.” Shaking her head, Michaela continued. “He’d wind up getting mad at his own incompetence and selling off the whole ranch before he even realized what he had.” She smiled, breaking her tanned face into a freckled mess of weathered wrinkles.

Old Amarillo(Amish Journeys#1) -- WeWriWa -- 5/3/15

Welcome back to Katie's journey! Please feel free to scroll down in blog posts to read Old Amarillo from the beginning! Remember, Old Amarillo is releasing in print and digital formats from 5 Prince Publishing on September 3 of this year! This blog gives you a sneak peek into the book and allows you the chance to fall in love with  Katie, Peter, and all they encounter on their journey before anyone else! Stay tuned for a cover reveal party, as well!

Let us not waste any more time and rejoin our heroine on the dusky twilight trail in 1890, just outside outside of Gasthof Village, Indiana . . .

Carefully, she tucked the taxing strings into the nape of her hand-hewn dress. I could just take my covering off and stow it in my apron, Katie thought.
Guilt at simply having the thought niggled in her stomach. Even though she was well away from the watchful eyes of her Amish village, it still didn’t feel right to take the white gauzy prayer covering off completely. She gave it a pat as another of what was most likely her mother’s shrieks met her ears. “God, please hear my prayer –”
As quickly as it gusted, the breeze died off, leaving Katie alone in a vast and eerie calm. The yip of a coyote replaced the melancholy laments of her mother, now lost without the breeze to carry them.

Tune in next week for eight more sentences from Old Amarillo (Amish Journeys #1). For now, feel free to pop back over to visit the other Weekend Writing Warriors and pay homage to their eight sentence contributions to the writing world :-)

WeWriWa -Old Amarillo (Amish Journeys #1) - April 19, 2015

Welcome to the inaugural post for Weekend Writing Warriors on my new Amish-only blog! I'm glad you're here. This week's eight sentence excerpt comes from my next Amish novel, Old Amarillo (Amish Journeys #1), releasing from 5 Prince Publishing September 3rd. Enjoy!

Gasthof Village, Indiana
1890

As the sun sank lower in the sky and the farther she got from the safety of Gasthof Village, each step on the rutty clods seemed to hurt more than the last. What were you thinking, Katie Knepp?
The cool Indiana breeze that had been kissing her ankles and cheeks switched direction without warning, whipping her covering strings across her lips. Somewhere in the distance, her mother’s pitiful moans and hysterical shrieks were still audible.
“I’m sorry Mama,” Katie whispered, batting the troublesome strings from her in front of her face. She hadn’t known what to expect when she told her parents she was leaving their safe and secluded world, bound for the wilds of Texas, but she certainly hadn’t expected her mother’s reaction.
“Don’t let my baby go Jeremiah,” she’d screamed as Katie descended, like a whipped pup, down the hand-laid wooden porch after delivering her news. In atypical Amish fashion, her mother had made a dive for her from the top step, only to be expertly intercepted by her father.

Thank you for stopping by! Don't forget to stop back by next week for another homespun taste of Amish literary goodness, straight out of Old Amarillo!
